Celebrating Pride Month 2021
Each year, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield joins the rest of the world in celebrating LGBTQIA+, both in June and beyond. Last June in particular, we organised initiatives and events across our shopping centres and offices to raise awareness and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community!
Steeped in history
Pride is celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots that occurred in New York City in June 1969, which emerged following raids targeting the LGBTQIA+ community. Pride Month is an opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual people to make themselves visible, and reiterate the importance of an inclusive society in which everyone's rights and safety are ensured. It is also a chance to come together and recognize the progress made over time for the benefit of the LGBTQIA+ Community.
Pride moments at URW
In celebrating Pride this year, our shopping centres and teams put together an exciting array of initiatives locally with a series of live sessions, events and inspiring content. Among them:
- In the UK, the shopping centre digital screens, banners and bunting flags at our sites in London brightly showcased Pride artwork.
- At La Maquinista in Barcelona, Spain, two famous railway benches were swathed in Pride colours in support of the LGBTQIA+ community.
- Many of our shopping centres in Germany supported Pride colours within their reception areas, with the Pride flag displayed at visitor entrances. Our shopping centre guest services teams also sported name badges showcasing the Pride flag!
- The US teams twirled into Pride month with several RuPaul Drive ‘N Drag events in Westfield Wheaton, Maryland, a Pride Pop-Up featuring a collection of local LGBTQ+ vendors & creators and a “Pride Prom” with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at the Westfield San Francisco Centre. They also splashed the Pride colours across the Westfield Century City site, Westfield Topanga & the Village in Los Angeles and The Oculus in New York. They wrapped up the celebration with an impactful talk on “How to be an effective ally for the LGBTQIA+ Community”.
For URW teams around the world, Pride is a year-long commitment. We promote an inclusive culture so everyone can be proud and comfortable with who they are in the workplace. After all, we all play a role in LGBTQIA+ inclusion.
