URW expands clean energy production at European centres

#Group News
URW’s Better Places sustainability plan commits the Group to being net zero across Scopes 1 & 2 by 2030 and across all scopes by 2050. On-site solar panel installations are key for us to secure, for the long-term, the procurement of renewable electricity, allowing us to reduce the carbon emissions from our energy consumption.

In the past few months, we’ve made further strides to expand our clean electricity production, including:

✅ In the Czech Republic, we’ve installed 448 solar panels on the rooftop of Westfield Chodov, capable of producing around 186 MWh of renewable power each year – enough to power 62 Czech households. This is the first phase of a plan to cover more than 8,000 square metres of rooftop with PV panels at the centre.

✅ At Westfield City Süd in Austria, we unveiled plans for a new photovoltaic power station. The facility will harness the power of 1,300 solar panels to output 450 MWh of green power each year, supplementing the existing large-scale PV system on the shopping centre’s rooftop.

✅ In Germany, after commissioning a rooftop photovoltaic system at our Paunsdorf Center in Leipzig at the end of October, we began construction of another large-scale PV site at Ruhr Park in Bochum. When complete in April this year, its 3,600 solar modules will generate 1,434 MWh of clean electricity per year – powering 45 percent of Ruhr Park’s public areas.

These are just a few of the ways we’re using our shopping centre assets as engines of renewable energy. For more about URW’s net-zero roadmap, as well as all our sustainability commitments and targets, discover our Better Places plan.
